Be Unapologetically Cheesy w/ Fatty Cakes (Podcast #22)
Fatty Cakes and the Puff Pastries are good for the ears, the eyes, the heart and the belly! How do I know this? Well, Alice Bag told me on Episode 17! She actually produced the high-calorie group’s new self-titled album, which you can pre-order now from Emotional Response Records (out Nov. 9)! I also know this because I have gobbled up the Fresno Grrrl Gang’s entire catalog like a hot pack of pink Starburst and I now feel just a teeny bit better about being a lady rocker in America (or just a woman living in America). Thanks Fatty Cakes! ; )
These musicians are not just tongue in cheek performance artists out to get a laugh while dancing around with cardboard pizzas. Sure they are witty, razor sharp, and hilarious, but they also mad as hell. They have their eye on the prize and tackle issues that are not oft heard in rock n roll today. Being a fat woman, being a queer woman, being a person who does not fit into binary gender roles…these are voices we need to hear more of. Seeing this ragtag outfit grace the cover of Maximum Rock n Roll this month made my teenage girl punk heart soar. YES! THIS IS BIG, PEOPLE. THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN! What could be punker? I’ll wait.
On Episode 22, the illustrious Puff Pastries and their fearless leader, Miz Fatty Cakes, talk everything from their poignant, frantic Panic Attack video to the banishment of dairy from the recording studio (per their fairy punk-mother’s wise wishes). We also tackle such important topics as the best ranch dressing in Fresno, how we can lift artists around us, and the hotly contested “pineapple on pizza” debate.
Trigger warning: Pineapple on pizza is delicious.
One thing is certain: I’ve never done a podcast with more laughter. I hope this laughter is totally contagious and you find yourself rolling around on the floor googling “used glockenspiel for sale.”
Main take-away? Make sure you go see Fatty Cakes on Tour and pick up a copy of their new LP next month! Follow ‘em on social media for updates, they’re unapologetically liking, posting, and tagging, too. ( #whitecheeseprivelage )
If you’re feeling crappy about the state of affairs in America, I recommend you turn to these lovable and fierce humans. They’ve got you, and they’ll bust out the craft supplies at the drop of a hat. Oh, and listen to the very end of the episode to hear “Petty Petty Princess,” off their new album. Think of this is a savory taste that will certainly jack up your carb cravings and have you ready for MORE… Good thing a heaping plate of seconds are coming soon! XO
