Ep 43: Death by Pogo w/ Kim Warnick of The Fastbacks
Johnny Ramone, Eddie Vedder and Weird Al walk into a green room….OK, better to let legendary singer Kim Warnick tell this joke herself!
The Fastbacks' bassist/vocalist is full of hilarious stories, zingy one-liners and a down-to-earth humility that only comes from flying so close to sun and actually living to tell the tale (in an alternate universe run by record store geeks, perhaps The Fastbacks could have been the next Nirvana).
It's a funny story, really: the pioneering Seattle band were always too eccentric, too weird and (as Kim says) maybe that's a good thing…I mean, can you imagine “Fastbacks” tees lining the racks at your local Hot Topic?
The group of high school buddies (including Lulu Gargiulo: guitar/vocals and genius guitarist/ band leader Kurt Bloch) not only influenced would-be-punks to pick up a guitar, they also got to live out their own teenage fantasies opening up for the likes of the Ramones and Joan Jett.
Touring the world (and finally making it to Japan just like her heroes, The Runaways), Kim has lived every high school garage band's wet dream. Today, we bring it all back to 1979, when Kim was just a kid dreaming about attacking the bass on stage just like Dee Dee.
So...what happens when you invite mom and dad into the pogo pit? Did Dr. Frank really ask for an entire series of Encyclopedia Brittanica in his rider? What's all this about Joan Jett's pubes? How the hell did Kurt keep it all together for so many years? All these questions and more are answered (well, sort of) on this here podcast.
What a way to rocket into 2021!
